Letter to the editor. Delete

In their 'Sandesh' to 'Mumbai Samachar' the activists say that in 'Hindustan', 'Times' are changing. Robberies, rapes, and scams are committed at 'Mid-day' and even in the 'Afternoon'. People do not show courage to have 'Samna' with goondas and scamsters. Since there is no 'Free press' in India, how can an average 'Indian Express' his views?. So on this auspicious day, let us all unite and work to give 'Navshakti' to our countrymen to bring true 'Loksatta' in 'Bharat'.

That's from a mail from Dr. Leo Rebello. Amongst many other things, Dr. Rebello of Mumbai calls himself the President of the All India Letter-Writers Association. He says that "AILWA" is "celebrating its Silver Jubilee". And silly Rupert Murdoch, he thought blogs had replaced letters to the editor.

I can't understand why his selection of quotes in the mail shows so much anger with the media, but two quotes are worth pasting:

The secret of successful journalism is to make your readers so angry they will write half your paper for you.
- C E M Joad

Journalists are like dogs, whenever anything moves they begin to bark.
- Arthur Schopenhauer

Rebello says that to celebrate its silver jubilee, AILWA has got itself a "powerful website". It doesn't look like a professional website, and with those huge ads it's anything but powerful. Don't waste your time visiting it and tell Dr. Rebello about a website called blogger.com.

I don't see why a letter writers' association should be publishing books such as "
Poems on Animate and Inanimate (Anthology) by Dr. Kazuyosi Ikeda", but it would be interesting to browse through "Pen Power (Encyclopedia of Letters to the Editor) by Dr. Leo Rebello".

I remember growing up writing letters to the editor. The first time I got one published in my early teens, half the worries of my life were over. When I first saw my letters in
India Today or Outlook (the latter's being the most delicious letters page), I considered myself a media mogul.

One day I saw the London Times in the British Library in Lucknow, and was amazed to see two-thirds of a page devoted to letters. Indian papers have only cut down on the space for letters since then, and the London Times under Mr Murdoch has changed itself into a 'compact' version that sells better. And I've grown up too.

Dr Rebello's watch needs a new battery.

Couldn't you find a better peg for a post on letters to the ed? why is the doc's pic here? why give him so much importance? i think he stinks. and i think people who write letters to the ed just to see their names in print are sick. and pray tell us what the hell does an association of letter-writers exist for?

and btw, what was the man doing at an AIDS conference when he doesn't believe there's such a thing as AIDS? who sponsored his junket?

Nitin,

The post is not about letter writing but indeed about the man and about the "All India Letter Writers Association". It is in response to his mail on mailing lists (hyperlinked in the post) about the silver jubilee of the "All India Letter Writers Association". I agree with you that people who write letters to see their name in print suck. It would be nice if you could appreciate the humour of it! And as to why his pic is there, or why this particular pix is there, I offer no comments. A picture is worth a thousand words. About the AIDS issue, I would like the answers as well.

Thanks!

Shivam,

Thnk you for poking fun at Dr Rebello. I've known him for about ten years now, and he has been a source of endless amusement. Did you get his email about going walking for peace? Did you know he ran for President? Etc.

See you in a DTC bus sometime...

-- Blogger shaun, 5/03/2005 04:33:00 AM

Dilip: Thanks! Looks like one needs to do a complete profile of Dr. Rebello. And you're in Mumbai, how would we meet in a DTC?

Nitin: I read your comment again: about writing letters to see one's name in print, I used to do it in my early teens. It was a part of growing up and I see no reason why I should be apologetic about it.

Cheers,
Shivam

Shivam, I had tried opening the link to the mail but the message does not exist, your post seemed to somewhat ramble about 'letter-writing' and its tone toward the doc seemed to be neutral. At least some people grow up; others just spread misinformation and piss me off.
